Megan Thrasher

PROFESSIONAL DOG TRAINER

Megan Thrasher is a professional dog trainer serving Western North Carolina, specializing in family dogs, adventure dogs, and behaviorally complex cases — with a particular passion for herding breeds and helping dogs safely earn meaningful, real-world freedom.

Raised on a farm, Megan learned early that animals are not projects, they are individuals. Farm life required responsibility, consistency, and the ability to read subtle behavioral changes long before they escalated. That early immersion in real-world animal stewardship continues to shape her practical, observant approach to training today.

Education & Professional Development
Megan believes strongly in continuing education and hands-on mentorship.

Her training background includes:
• Graduate of the AdventureHounds Shadow Program
• Completed multiple professional training courses, apprenticeships, and mentorships
• Experience working in professional training and dog care facilities
• Hands-on work raising, training, and placing service dogs
• Ongoing study of canine behavior, learning theory, and human & canine nervous system regulation

While formal education matters, Megan believes some of the most meaningful learning happens directly in the field, working with dogs and the people who love them.
She has lived with, managed, and trained hundreds of dogs across a wide range of behavioral challenges and household environments, developing the ability to quickly assess what a dog needs and how to communicate it clearly to their human.

Experience With Complex Dogs

Megan thrives working with dogs that others may find overwhelming:
• Reactive dogs
• Fearful or sensitive dogs
• High-drive and overstimulated dogs
• Dogs with bite histories
• Dogs struggling to function in everyday environments

But she also deeply enjoys working with stable dogs and helping them become exceptional companions.

“I don’t just train challenging dogs, I’ve lived with them. I understand the stress, the hypervigilance, and the constant ‘what if’ scenarios owners carry. And I also know what it feels like to watch those dogs soften and thrive.”

Training Philosophy
Megan identifies as a balanced, multi-method trainer. Her work blends:
• Positive reinforcement
• Clear communication, structure, and leadership
• Breed fulfillment and outlets
• Fair, thoughtful corrections when appropriate

Her philosophy is simple:

Clarity builds confidence.
Dogs thrive when expectations are consistent, communication is fair, and humans show up with calm leadership.

Adventure Dogs & Real-World Freedom
Nature plays a central role in Megan’s training approach.

She is especially passionate about helping dogs develop the skills needed to safely enjoy the world alongside their humans, including:
• Off-leash reliability
• Trail etiquette
• Outdoor neutrality
• Adventure readiness (hiking, camping, travel)

At the same time, Megan works extensively with family and urban dogs, helping create structure and communication that lowers stress for both dog and human.
Beyond Dog Training

Before becoming a full-time trainer, Megan built a diverse professional background in:
• Healthcare and hospital environments
• Outdoor retail management
• Hospitality and food service leadership
• Customer-facing operations

These experiences strengthened her ability to communicate clearly, coach people under pressure, and support families navigating challenging situations — an often overlooked piece of successful dog training.

Her Approach
Grounded, empathetic, and quietly bold, Megan helps dogs and their people build:
• Trust
• Clarity
• Emotional regulation
• Real-world reliability
• A life that feels easier for both ends of the leash

Who Megan Is Best For
Megan is an excellent fit for:
• Owners who feel overwhelmed and need clear direction
• Families navigating reactivity, fear, or behavioral challenges
• Herding breed owners seeking healthy outlets for drive
• Active individuals wanting reliable off-leash dogs
• Clients who value structure, honesty, and consistency

She works best with people who are open, coachable, and ready to build something sustainable — not just quick fixes.

Freedom is earned through clarity, trust, and accountability.

When Megan is not working with clients, she enjoys hiking, exploring nature, and continuing the development of her own dogs, Cedar & Sage. For Megan, Sage is a living embodiment of her training philosophy—the balance of structure, freedom, and adventure. Cedar’s journey, shaped through rehabilitation and trust-building, reflects her deep commitment to meeting each dog as an individual and helping them find stability and safety in the world. With a compassionate and practical approach, Megan helps dogs and their humans discover their best selves, together.
